The impact of immunizations on the health of children is often taken for granted in the United States, but for VisionTrust children it is a gift that can prevent unnecessary illness or even death. Measles is a great example of the success of immunization awareness and access improvement around the world. The push to get children immunized around the world has resulted in a 78% drop in measles deaths between 2000 and 2012 worldwide.
Despite this success, 1 in 5 children are still missing out. More than half of these children live in just 3 countries: India, Indonesia and Nigeria.
There are many reasons that VisionTrust children do not get the immunizations that are so critical to their health. The Global Health Team is working diligently with our countries’ leadership to offset challenges related to access, build an awareness among caregivers and VisionTrust staff and to bring the resources to get the immunizations to assure our children are not in the 1 in 5.
We hope you will join us as we seek to bring health to the children we serve. Help us spread the word and echo the message of World Immunization Week 2014, “By making sure that you and your family are up-to-date with the vaccines you need, you give yourselves the best chance of a healthy future.” Help us give our children this healthy future too!
