Kim S. traveled with us on her third mission trip to Malawi this past July. We’re thankful she’s willing to share her incredible experience with us on the blog today.
Since I was 12 years old my dream was to work with orphans in Africa. 39 years later God showed me that this was His purpose for me on earth by not only leading an orphan ministry at a church, but sending me on my first mission trip to Malawi, Africa through our church. Since then I have become a board member for J127 Project who is a partner with VisionTrust Malawi in helping the community of Katsekera Village, and I’ve returned to Malawi three times.
Just this past Christmas my husband surprised me with sponsoring a little girl named Zefa for my Christmas gift. In July I was able to go on a my third mission trip back to Katsekera and the biggest blessing was to meet Zefa personally and her family during visits to sponsored children’s homes. Her parents were so happy to meet me and thanked me for helping their daughter through sponsorship. Spending time with Zefa while working at the Learning Center has built a relationship and brought such joy to both our hearts. Seeing her being feed twice a day, being taught about God, educated, clothed and getting medical attention truly showed how much sponsoring a child does changes their lives. It has been my mission to get more people in our church and our community here in Modesto, California to sponsor a child and change more lives in Katsekera.
My heart remains in Katsekera knowing that there are many friendships I have made in the community while partnering together in building new classrooms for the children, teaching about God’s love and hope and sponsoring many of the children. Three years ago, when we visited Katsekera for the first time, I remember meeting a retired couple and gave the wife a friendship bracelet. They asked if I would return and I said, “Yes, someday God will bring me back.”
On this recent mission trip, as I was painting old chalkboards at the community school, I was told that someone came to see me. Walking in, dressed up was this couple that I met three years ago.
They had heard that I had returned to their village and came to see me. They remembered me and the woman showed me that she still wore the friendship bracelet I gave her. I thanked God for bringing out hearts together! They invited me to their home the next day so I could see where they lived and meet some of their family. I learned that they had 10 adult children and 25 grandchildren. During their home visit I got to meet one of their daughters and three of their grandchildren. At the end of our visit they presented me with a gift—a live chicken which I know is a huge giving! As we said goodbyes I knew God has gifted me with a friendship across the world that was the biggest blessing ever! The Kingdom of God has transformed my life by teaching and using me to transform others’ lives simply by equipping them with tools, education, good health, encouragement, love and spiritual mentorship.
I thank God each and every day for being a part of VisionTrust and doing His work by being His hands and feet!
