A Girl Scout troop in Colorado Springs, CO, recently raised nearly $100 to help purchase school supplies — notebooks, pencils, glue, scissors, erasers, and more — for VisionTrust orphans in Ayacucho, Peru.
The 26 orphans who live at Casa Luz Home are still chattering excitedly about their first few weeks back at school. They talk about their new teachers, being reunited with friends, and the homework they receive each day. In the midst of the chatter, they make sure to take time to gather and pray, thanking God for providing them with school supplies. I received this photo of smiling faces next to brightly colored boxes of supplies as a thank-you note.
Many of these kids came to Casa Luz from indescribable places of brokenness: abandoned on a highway, beaten by family members, starved for days so their parents could buy alcohol instead of food. But if you look closely at this picture, you’ll see faces that belong to kids whose stories are being transformed by the love of God and changed by sponsors and Girl Scouts who have chosen to make a difference. Because of that, these kids are experiencing something far more powerful than fear: they’re experiencing hope.
Thank you so much to all who are sponsoring and praying for the 162 children who are part of VisionTrust in Peru. You are part of God’s plan to grow hope in the hearts of children who have experienced much of the opposite in their little lives.
Also, if your daughter is a Girl Scout, please share with her about Casa Luz and the kids who so desperately want to dream of a new future. Tell her how collecting quarters, dimes and nickels can help an orphan go to school and learn, grow, and flourish. Tell her that God has a special love for the poor and the oppressed, and that His people are His distribution of that love. Tell her that giving the hope of Jesus to someone feels even better than giving out Girl Scout Cookies.
