This post comes to you from college student, Raven M., who just served with us in Cruz Blanca, Guatemala for the second year in a row. It was written during her time on the team.
Today I met my sponsor child Toni again, but this time, he knew who I was and was beyond excited to see me. His mom told me he couldn’t sleep last night because he had to wake up early and see me. He was one of the first ones at the Learning Center today, and when Toni saw me, he gave me the biggest hug I’ve ever gotten. I met his mom and his little sister, and then I gave him a gift and a picture of my family—he was more interested in the picture. When we went off to where everyone else was, he didn’t let go of my hand for a second. We played for a while, and then he ran over and had me meet his dad. It was amazing to see his whole family there and happy.
After a bit, Rut, the National Director in Guatemala, came over and told me that my Toni’s family had just bought a tuk tuk (a small, motorized taxi). They wanted to take me for a ride! So they drove us up the mountain and showed us where the concrete factory is being built, and then we went to a house that sold roses. They bought me two dozen roses, which in their culture is a very special flower. After that, we went back to where all the kids were and played until it was time to go. It was so sad having to say goodbye to him. But, his family said if I don’t come back next year, they will be waiting for me to visit another time. They also told me they had my letter I had written him framed in their house and they are going to do the same with my picture! This was one of the best days of my life, knowing I’ve had such an impact on Toni’s life even though we’d only met briefly last year.
