Hugs, hugs and more hugs. I couldn’t get enough on my first VisionTrust trip to Cruz Blanca, Guatemala. After visiting this very poor village, I was amazed at how loving the people were of such little means and how the kids loved going to the Learning Center. There, over 250 kids come year-round for nutritious meals, love, education, and to learn about Jesus.
For one week, I got to serve alongside the team from Big Woods Bible Church in Lock Haven, PA. We taught the kids Bible stories and songs in Spanish, taught the older kids how to dream by showing them medical professions, and we simply played ball with the younger ones. Through the generosity of this team, we installed 14 water filters in the village. It felt surreal to walk into their homes – cornstalk walls, dirt floors, a simple stove, and chickens running around. There were no toys in the homes, yet the children were just so happy to play with a stick, a ball or just simply hug us or hold our hand. And they couldn’t get enough of having their picture taken.
Often several would pile around you and quickly wanted to see their picture. I’m sure that some of them had never seen themselves before. I totally fell in love with the kids that week. I especially enjoyed getting to know two girls, Quanda and Rosalinda. Quanda had holes in her pants and lice in her hair, but she wanted nothing more than to keep hugging me. Rosalinda came from a family of 9 siblings and enjoyed weaving and playing Frisbee with me. I was quite sad leaving because I wanted to know so much more about them, but I know a whole village is being changed simply because a few kids are being loved and cared for with the love of Jesus.
