We received this update from Alison K., a team member from Taylor University in Peru this week. See more on Taylor University’s travels on their blog.
Our team has been truly blessed by the people here in Ayacucho. We have grown close friendships with our hosts, the kids at Casa Luz, and the members of the local church. We have been able to see God’s hand at work in subtle ways through friendships with the local people. It is safe to say that our team has fallen in love with the people here.
Today our team had the opportunity to broaden our perspective of the people in Ayacucho by visiting VisionTrust’s new Learning Center hosted by Pastor Rumulo. The Learning Center serves as a place where local children who live in very poor circumstances can come to have a meal and spend time in fellowship with one another. The Learning Center does not officially open until later this year but we were blessed to have Pastor Rumulo invite local kids to kick start his ministry.
The primary focus for the Learning Center was for our Bio team to teach lessons on hygiene and conduct health examinations. The favorite lesson amongst the kids was a lesson about hand washing using a magic glow lotion. The kids apply the lotion to their hands, and then we showed them under a black light how many “germs” are on their hands. Then they wash their hands and put them under the black light to see how well they wash their hands. The kids really enjoyed this and were amazed by a simple example of how germs spread.
We also had time to play with the kids. We went to a nearby soccer field and the boys played soccer and the girls played volleyball. It was really great being able to invest our time and God’s love on a new group of kids.
Please continue to pray for our team as we continue VBS and Teen Purity lessons at Casa Luz this week. Pray for open hearts of the kids and for God’s love to be eminent in our actions. Pray for continued health and safety of our team.
