MiKayla S. is a child sponsor and team member that recently traveled with us to Brazil. Here she shares her sponsorship experience and how she has witnessed God at work in both herself and her sponsored child, Keven.
Three years ago during Projeto Amar’s annual summer camp, I was able to meet an amazing young boy named Keven who left a significant impact on my life. The two of us found a way to communicate through broken English and broken Portuguese phrases, and I quickly learned the power love has over any kind of barrier. He was patient and loving, and it was apparent that his heart was eager to share that love with our team.
Returning home, Keven was on my heart and I knew God was up to something. Through the VisionTrust sponsorship program, I was able to help provide for his needs and connect with him through letter-writing, and have been humbled to do so to this day. One of the many ways this boy has amazed and continues to amaze me is by consistently telling me in his letters that it is not just me praying for him, but he is also praying for me.
Upon returning to Brazil this summer, I was seeking God about how He wanted to use our team to impact the lives of the children at Projeto Amar. One thing that the Lord revealed to me was the intent of His heart. One of the ways He wanted to use me was to show Keven how much he is truly loved and valued—so much so that He would send a North Dakotan girl from around 5,000 miles away to return with a team to simply be with him and the beautiful children of Goiania.
I returned to Projeto Amar, and one day as I was spending time with some of the children, I glanced over to see a new group of children arriving for the afternoon. My heart was so greatly overjoyed to see Keven for the first time in three years! I still find it difficult to describe that moment. Joy is really the only word I can properly use to describe being able to connect with him again in person. I was also able to meet his mother and grandmother, which was something I appreciated so much. Hearing about how large this boy’s heart is and how he serves at Projeto Amar brought me to tears, and I cherished the opportunity to witness his strength and how he leads by example.
For the past three years, I have waited expectantly to receive Keven’s letters in the mail. The time I was able to spend with him at camp overjoyed my heart and I was humbled to see what a sweet, kind, smart, caring, and strong young man he is. For that, I will be forever grateful. Now as I return home, I will continue to wait expectantly for more of his letters in the mail, and as I do, I will be encouraged to put others before myself and honor them in love every day, as Keven has inspired me to do.
