Happy World Health Day! This year The World Health Organization has chosen to shed a much needed light on the issue of food safety. Among the amazing committed experts that serve VisionTrust children, is a group of people called the Food Security Team. They come from across the US with backgrounds ranging from PhD’s in nutrition, Chemical Engineers, Tropical Agricultural Specialists, Animal Feed Specialists and farmers. Each person shares a commitment to provide high quality, protein rich, and safe food from local and sustainable food sources.
Providing food seems like a clear goal, but it’s easy to overlook how difficult it can be to get high quality food from sustainable sources. According to world health authorities there are over 200 diseases caused by unsafe food, and over 2 million deaths each year from unsafe food and water. The vulnerable children and communities we serve often suffer long-term consequences from food that’s not effectively cleaned, cooked or stored. While we seek to develop partnerships to create local sustainable food sources with chicken projects in the Dominican Republic and the exploration of goat projects in India, we also focus on what can be done now to help our programs better serve children. We train local leaders on simple yet impactful solutions like hand washing, preparing raw and cooked foods separately, thoroughly cooking food, safe storage of food and clean water to prepare food.
We hope that you will consider supporting the efforts of our Food Security Team as they work from the farm to the plate to provide accessible safe, consistent, high quality food sources for our children.
