Part of the joy I’ve experienced in student ministry through the years has come when a student “gets it”. That moment when a teen realizes God is working throughout the world and that, somehow someway, He chooses to use us for His Kingdom is a beautiful thing. These moments are what motivates and fuels those of us in ministry to keep the fires burning. Below is a message that has fed my motivation to continue on from a student who attended a trip to the Dominican Republic in June.
What an incredible trip! I wish to thank you for both your support for my mission trip. I wanted to give you an update on what all I saw God do in the Dominican Republic.
Each morning my entire team rode the bus into Cotui to start the day off with VBS. It was amazing seeing the children run alongside the bus because they knew that the “Americanos were coming!” As soon as we stepped off the bus we were bombarded by hugs, laughter, and smiles. Since there were over 200 kids each morning, we divided into groups to do VBS. I had the privilege of working with the 2nd-3rd graders. It was so amazing to see how each child was so open and receptive to total strangers coming into their lives. They trusted us even though they didn’t know us. It was truly a breath of fresh air since the very idea of trusting strangers is so foreign in America. The kids loved participating in music, games, stories, and crafts, but most of all, they enjoying being around us. It was truly amazing.
After VBS ended each day, the construction work began. Each year our church and VisionTrust had made small steps toward building a functional school building. This year, the building can be put into practical use. By the end of the week we had poured over 5,000 square feet of concrete for the floor, the roof was put up, and the majority of the building was primed and painted. With the progress we made, the village will now be able to use that building for church, school, and as a storm shelter. These people were truly blessed by your gift.
I was incredibly blessed by the opportunity to go on this trip. Now that I have been, I can’t wait to return next year! One of the most amazing things that happened this week was during the VBS time. The last day of VBS, the gospel was shared. I was with a group of 50 kids and 47 of them said that they had chosen to accept Christ for the first time. It was an incredible feeling knowing that I was a part of that. Without your gift, I would not have been able to take part in such an incredible event. For that, you have my sincerest thanks.
That is what it’s all about. Creating opportunities for others to serve so that children around the world receive the love and grace of Christ. This student got “it”. Living for God and loving others, this is what should fuel us all.
