Holly E. recently joined us on a team to the Dominican Republic. Below are the reflections of her time spent in the Herrera.
I recently arrived back to NYC from a very eventful and transformative trip to the Dominican Republic. The team and I were sent there with one main task—to repair desks. The outcome was so much greater than just a maintenance project, we truly received a new understanding of God’s heart.
I always get that warm, comfortable feeling of home every place God leads me—whether it be South Africa, New Jersey, Jamaica or the Dominican Republic. This has inspired me to analyze the word “home” and its meaning in my life.
On Sunday, we had the opportunity to attend church in the inner city of Santo Domingo called Herrera. After the service we had the privilege of walking through the streets and seeing the depths of people’s lives firsthand. As we toured the community we squeezed through tight alleyways, passed by a creek with mounds of garbage and waste, but then we entered people’s homes—a place of pride, ownership and rest. They allowed us to come inside and pray for the needs of those who were sick. We stood and held hands, unified as one family. It was then I realized home is where Jesus is. Home is so much more than walls, windows and doors. It is Jesus at the center of it all—creating the environment of home is only possible with the power and presence of The Holy Spirit.
God is using local men, women and children who are agents of the Holy Spirit to empower the community of Herrera daily. That is what changes the atmosphere from fear, poverty and desperation to a place of hope, joy, delight and home. As a child of God we hold the power to unleash and unlock the wonder of “home” to the world around us. When you are lonely, desperate and hurting, home has the power to heal and restore from the inside out.
Just as the locals of the Dominican Republic released home to my team and me this week, I encourage you to declare home at your workplace, coffee shop, the mall, or wherever you wander. Lives will be changed eternally!
