In June, we had a great group of students and adults join us in the Dominican Republic once again. One of these team members was a young woman who just graduated high school and is looking forward to heading to Oklahoma State University in the Fall. Let’s hear her thoughts on her special trip.
This was my second year coming to the Dominican Republic with VisionTrust and I loved it even more than the first time, which seems impossible.
I was in charge of the 8,9, and 10 year olds during VBS and they were pretty hard to handle! The boys were so rough and didn’t want to listen at first. It was very hard to be patient and loving with them when they were fighting with us and hitting each other. The only thing we really knew how to say to them was “no.” But we learned that even though they acted really tough, if we showed them love and hugged on them instead of trying to fight with them, they were so much calmer. Even though we don’t speak the same language, loving them and showing them Christ’s love is all that they need.
It is so cool how we form such strong relationships with these kids that can’t even understand us, and its all because of Christ. It was so humbling to see how happy these kids are all the time, even when, in our eyes, they have nothing. Why do we complain all the time when we have everything we need and more, but these kids that have nothing never complain? I kept asking myself that question and it showed me how selfish I really am. I’ve been on other mission trips before, but this one is so different and it’s one that I want to go on every single year.
The coolest thing to me is being able to sponsor a child and actually get to know them. You get to see how and where they live and how much you really are helping them. It makes me so happy to be able to sponsor two children and have such a strong relationship with not only them, but the rest of their family. When I left the Dominican, I was already looking forward to the next year when I get to go back.

Taking a trip not only impacts the children we work with, but also the team members who join us. Make plans now to come see how God is working through VisionTrust to show people what it means to live for God and love others!
