My 2 year old asked me this morning why I had to go to work. I told her there are children whose mommies and daddies are sick or don’t have enough money to buy them food, and I need to help them.
Mayli is 4 years old and her little brother Jose is 1 ½. Their mother is an extremely poor woman who has suffered much. Her children are from different fathers who each abandoned her. She also suffers from severe loss of hearing. Her only means of earning money is to go to the market in the city, more than a 2 hour walk from her house. She begins selling wares at 4am and finishes at 4pm. The little bit of money she earns only provides her with food for that day. She does not have anyone who can help her care for her children, so they have to make this journey with her each day. They often get sick from being outside in the cold weather. Mayli cannot attend preschool because they cannot afford it. Both of the children are severely malnourished.
Mariela, our Director in Peru, has been telling me stories of children like Mayli and Jose since I first met her 5 years ago. We have prayed together almost monthly for God to provide the funds needed to start a Learning Center on the outskirts of Ayacucho so poor, hungry, and vulnerable children could be cared for. PRAISE GOD, those prayers have been answered, and Luz y Vida Learning Center opens this week! A generous church in Muskego, WI has sponsored 22 children who will, for the first time, receive 3 meals a day, tutoring in their school work, and the love and protection of Pastor Romulo and his church members.
My daughter hates it when I leave her to go to work, but even at 2 years old she understands that helping other kids is important. I am honored to be part of VisionTrust.
