Orphan Sunday: How can we respond?
An estimated 140 million children worldwide are considered to be orphans, having lost one or both parents. Does hearing that ever make you feel overwhelmed?
Based on Scripture, we know that God’s heart aches for the orphaned and vulnerable (Psalm 68:5) and therefore, we are called to go and serve them in love (James 1:27, John 14:21). Still, sometimes we feel like what we can do isn’t enough. If our hearts align with God’s and ache like His does for these children, then the pain and guilt we feel can be overwhelming.
On Orphan Sunday, let’s celebrate the fact that we are not helpless. Restoration will be a gradual process—one that won’t be fully completed until Christ returns–but that shouldn’t cause us to surrender.
With that in-mind, here are three practical ways you can make a difference on Orphan Sunday:
Not all of us can give or go, but we can all pray for the Lord’s people, as He has commanded us to (Ephesians 6:18). Here are a few ways you can pray for orphans today:
- Ask God to give you His heart for orphans.
- Pray for the millions of orphaned children around the world–for their daily lives and well-being, and for them to know salvation through Jesus Christ.
- Pray that God’s church would be mobilized to care for orphaned, vulnerable, and impoverished children around the world.
2. Sponsor a child through VisionTrust
The children we serve around the world are capable, intelligent, and passionate, yet their earthly circumstances threaten their ability to reach their full potential.
What’s a more proactive way to love hurting children on this Orphan Sunday than by taking their hand and promising to support them through all that life may throw at them?
But don’t just take it from us–hear directly from those who have invested in a vulnerable child.
3. Change your perspective
Maybe you’ve prayed or you’ve given, but you want to answer God’s calling to go and serve His children directly. Short-term mission trips can give you a much-needed new perspective, as you build community with brothers and sisters while caring for those who need it most.
