It’s been a busy, yet productive, two weeks.
My wife Deanne and I just finished up a 5-day support-raising trip to the Nashville, Tennessee area. It was such a great time reconnecting with some old friends as we got to spend time talking about my new calling and role with VisonTrust. I hope to begin the work that the Lord has called me to starting full-time in July. I am so encouraged by all of the people we met and spent time with. Our Lord is so faithful! (1 Cor 1:9)
Deanne went back home after visiting TN, but I haven’t just yet. Instead, I have had the privilege to go on to the Dominican Republic with a team from VisionTrust. I’ve been blessed to hear first-hand the stories of lives changed by Christ and his love through the local heroes and kids of VisionTrust.
This is mainly a vision trip for me. I’m meeting and spending time with our local leaders (heroes), hearing more about their needs, the kids they serve, and their places of work. Simultaneously, I’m also working with the VisionTrust Communications Department, assisting with capturing these stories on video. Hearing stories about kids growing up to live for God and love others is so encouraging.
The Dominican Republic is a welcoming country with extremely gracious hosts. Since arriving, we’ve been able to visit several different sites and the leaders making a difference because of their love for Christ.
On Wednesday we visited a school for deaf children where many of them, while they were older, were just going to school for the first time. I learned that deaf children often times suffer considerably while growing up because of emotional abuse from their families. They also are not typically allowed to go to a regular public school. In fact, there really aren’t many schools for the deaf, and as kids age, it becomes nearly impossible for them to go to school.
This school wasn’t just a school for deaf children, but a place where the love and teachings of Jesus Christ and the Bible are proclaimed! There is also a church connected to the school where they experience the Word of the Lord through signing!
I had the privilege and pleasure of interviewing a young woman that grew up with a very difficult life, often played alone and didn’t know Jesus. While she was young, her mother abandoned her. She came to the deaf school in 2007, learned about Christ, and recently received Him as Lord and Savior. She was baptized and now is finishing school and serving the Lord by serving others. Praise God!
There are many other stories that I have heard—stories of hope, faith and love. It was incredible hearing about the faithfulness of our Lord in the most dire circumstances and conditions. The work that God is doing through VisionTrust and our local leaders is amazing and shows His great love for us.
