Ebola is real and a looming threat for our programs in both Liberia and Sierra Leone. We have more than 2,000 children and staff among these projects so we are keeping a careful eye on the situation and how we can best support our partners during this difficult time.
While the situation is critical and the government has closed all schools, Robert, our Liberian National Director, shared the strength he is finding from his US prayer warriors. On a call yesterday, as Robert drove back from being an encouragement to some of our project leaders, he shared that although schools are closed, they are using this time to plan for moving forward with a new school year and large scale health training related to disease prevention.
Robert shared the grim realities of the situation. His home is close to the “hospital” that is caring for the sick. He shared about the number of dead he has seen carried out and the reality of how it is closing everything down (much like the war just a few years ago). He shared an update about his sister-in-law, a nurse who has become infected, reporting that she appears to be stable at this point and hopes to share her testimony of God’s healing power. The situation has become very personal for him and his family.
Robert shared the peace he has received from our prayers and how he can see God’s hand at work to calm fears and bring about a needed change in the passivity that many Liberians have in letting others take care of it (government, agencies). He shared that the intense sunlight kills the virus and in the midst of the rainy season the sun is SHINING and he feels God’s power in the sun rays. He sees how God is using this to strengthen his faith and he is trusting God to give him the wisdom to lead and guide his team.
Robert is truly an inspiration through his faith as demonstrated in his peace for the moment, his hope for his nation, and his perseverance to support his team and the children. We are working closely with both Robert and our leadership in Sierra Leone to assure that they have the much needed supplies to prevent the spread of illness and to care for children who have been brought to their care in the crisis. We are also working closely with other organizations on the ground that are caring for the sick. Please help us to show support in this extraordinary time of need with a special contribution which will bring in additional supplies to protect our children against the spread of the disease.
