This blog post is brought to you by Sandra S., a team member from California.
What an experience! I had the opportunity to be a part of a medical missions group to the Dominican Republic with VisionTrust. I had never been out of the USA except for Canada ( does that even count?). I have no medical background, yet I found myself on a plane headed to the Dominican on a medical missions trip. I was with my life long friend of 39 years and a group of people I had never met before. I was a little nervous as I had no idea what was in store for the next 7 days.
Our team had the opportunity to go to a few different schools and orphanages. The children received medical exams and heard the good news of God’s love for them through dramas, songs and games.
God really used this trip to open my eyes to people who have very little, but have a huge love and commitment to their community and village. One afternoon, after the medical exams were finished, we had the opportunity to walk through the village in groups of 4-5 with a translator. As we went to each small hut, the kind and gracious people extended hospitality to us in a way I have never experienced. I know if a group of 4-5 people showed up at my door I would not be as gracious! We had the opportunity to pray and converse through the translator. The common thread I saw was when we asked how we could pray for them the same answer was heard, “pray for our village and the children.” Wow! What conviction to my heart! How could I change my community if I prayed for the children in my community and neighborhood to experience God’s love for them?
I kept thinking about a Bible verse in Proverbs, “Speak up for the people who have no voice, for the rights of all the down-and-outers. Speak up for justice! Stand up for the poor and destitute!”
I will never forget the faces of the beautiful people of the Dominican. I am forever changed and I can’t wait to go back! If you have ever thought about going on a mission trip and have doubted your abilities because you didn’t feel qualified…God will use you, He just needs a willing heart. You will be helping others and in return you will be forever changed!
