Since the earthquake in Nepal, we’ve been working to distribute hundreds of relief kits to villages in the remote districts of Gorkha and Dhading—some of the hardest hit areas. VisionTrust is the only organization these people have received help from.
During our time working in Gorkha and Dhading, we’ve also made several attempts to distribute relief kits to the unreached area of Northern Dhading. The northern region is geographically very difficult to reach, and debris from the earthquake made the road even more challenging to pass. Finally, last week, Buddhi Man Shakya was able to safely make it there!
While there, Buddhi Man visited two communities—Darkha and Kuri. Ninety percent of their homes had collapsed, along with three schools and five churches. Buddhi Man went door-to-door to visit and pray with the grieving families.
The people were very receptive to Buddhi Man. Earlier, when the communities were still unreachable, we had sent relief kits by helicopter. This was the only they had received, and they were very appreciative. But they will need more relief kits—enough to last three to four months—because monsoon season is beginning and the road will become inaccessible again, cutting off many food resources.
Buddhi Man was also able to share the idea of Learning Centers during his visit. He identified a need for three Centers, and the community had a very positive response—they requested to start as soon as possible! So, a community group and volunteer team was formed, and two head teachers and cooks have already been hired.
Buddhi Man and the community group laid out the essential “next steps” to get the three new Learning Centers up and running, as well as meet other needs in the communities:
- Distribute relief kits to 400 families;
- Build the Learning Centers with tin sheet;
- Purchase kitchen utensils for the Learning Centers;
- Distribute tin sheets for three schools (10 bundles per school);
- The volunteer team will dismantle the collapsed homes and begin the rebuilding process;
- Make home visits for counseling;
- If possible, Buddhi Man will visit again at the end of June.
Thank you to all who have prayed and generously given to the Nepal relief efforts. You are helping us be the hands and feet of Jesus to these beautiful people. Praise be to God!
