Last week I had the privilege of sharing about three amazing young women who have decided to give 6 weeks of their summer to serve in a VisionTrust project in the Dominican Republic. Their story continues this week. Even in the midst of struggle and stress, God brings joy and celebration. Learn more about this truth in this post by one of our girls, Lindsay, who is a senior at Texas A&M University:
Well it’s the end of the second week here in Cotui, and we definitely witnessed God do amazing things in our team and the people of this village! This second week was filled with vacation bible school, construction, teen girls ministry, community service projects, and dance classes.
It was an excellent week and a lot of incredible things happened, but I would like to just share two of my favorite stories. The last day that we were in the village, was my birthday. Birthdays aren’t really a big deal to me, so I was thinking it was going to be another typical day. However, when we arrived in the village that morning we got some very devastating news; someone had broken into the school and stolen most of our power tools and some kitchen supplies. The past 7 years that we have been coming here, this kind of crime has never happened so we were all in shock. Even though this happened, God was not surprised by this act. Nor was He without a plan. The men who stole the tools “happened” to leave all the ones we needed for that day to finish our portion of construction for the week! So, our team rallied together in prayer and finished the construction.
After VBS we had lunch and then Carly pulled me into the bathroom to play a game (yes I thought that was a weird location to do this). After I got out of the bathroom something happened that I will never forget! All of the women and teen girls that we had been with for the past 2 weeks, surprised me with signs, balloons, and a giant delicious cake!! They told me that they had been planning this since the beginning of the week and they all saved up their pesos to help buy the ingredients for the cake. This was such an unexpected act of kindness, especially because of what happened in the morning. They wanted to make sure that I had an awesome day despite the disappointment of the morning. They wanted to let me know how special I was to them! I cannot even explain how much that meant to me, and it was honestly the best birthday present I have ever received.
Then, after the second group left, we got to take some of the kids from Cotui to an absolutely amazing reservoir. It was so incredible to see how excited these five little boys were to even go on a road trip with us, and then they went absolutely insane once they saw the water! I’m telling you, we are three very blessed girls to be able to stay here for six weeks with the sweetest people ever! Please continue to keep the people of Cotui in your prayers, because God is doing some amazing things here.
God is definitely doing amazing things there and in many other places. Take time today to pray for the more workers like these to join the harvest around the world!
