As I visited Brazil last month, I cherished the time I got to spend with my sponsored child, Isaias. You may remember his story published in our Transformed magazine last year. At age 14, he is now the oldest at the Projeto Amar II Learning Center because children aren’t required to attend school after 9th grade. Instead, most are encouraged to get involved in criminal activity like running drugs, prostitution, or gangs. Brazil actually rates #6 for countries with the biggest economic gap—a few very rich, but millions extremely poor.
Isaias and I talked about the importance of him staying in school and connected with Projeto Amar II. I also mentioned I’d like to meet his mother. Isaias lives with his 3 sisters, 2 uncles, an abusive older brother recently out of prison, and his mother who’s a prostitute. His home is THE drug distributor for his community.
Just as I was about to leave for the day, I saw a woman standing outside the church where the Learning Center meets. Isaias’ mother was there with him and two of her daughters, but wouldn’t come inside. I was overjoyed to see her and grateful God opened the door for us to talk. I thanked her for allowing Isaias to continue attending school and the Learning Center instead of making him join the family “business.” She held my hands as I prayed for her and her children, her tears falling so hard that the back of my hands were dripping with them. I asked the translator why she was crying and she answered that it was because she could see that I loved her children as much as she does—something no one had ever done before.
God has certainly put a strong love in my heart for my sponsored child and his family. I am encouraged by Isaias’ commitment to serve God. Please join me in praying God continues to do a work in Isaias’ mother’s heart, and for the other children at Projeto Amar II and their caregivers. Just imagine what it would look like if their caregivers would also begin to live for God and love others!
Would you consider sponsoring a child? For $40 a month, you really can make a difference in their lives! We have many younger students waiting for a sponsor who need the love and care you can give with your sponsorship, prayers, and letters.
Thank you for allowing God to use you,
