This past November, a short-term mission team from Upstate New York, headed to Guatemala with a big task at hand – to transform the new VisionTrust rental space into a Learning Center facility. The property had previously been a small zoo, so needless to say, there was quite a bit of work to be done!
Over the course of just four days, the team members organized and inventoried mobile classroom pieces, set anchor bolts in the foundations, put up and painted walls, built soffits, and put in the roofing on two mobile classrooms. On top of that, they built a safety railing, put in stairs, organized a whole storage room, helped plaster and paint the two classroom areas and painted a beautiful mural the children would see when they entered the Learning Center courtyard. You would think with all the activity that the team wouldn’t have had much time to connect with the children, but that was far from the truth!
Each day, a handful of little helpers came to assist the team members with whatever tasks they could. Painting was their favorite activity, and everyone had a blast working alongside them and playing around during the breaks. The children absolutely loved hanging out with the group, and they asked over and over again for “vueltas”, as they couldn’t get enough of being picked up and spun around.
While it was extremely rewarding to see the completed construction projects at the end of the week, the biggest win was the smiles on the faces of the children as they saw their new Learning Center come to life! This January, when the 2014 school year begins, these little boys and girls, along with hundreds of their peers, will gather in a new, beautiful space to share meals, further their education, and experience the love of Christ! Though the animals have gone, this space will still be one of wonder, exploration, learning and fun. Thank you, Michaels Group, for making the new Learning Center in Cruz Blanca a reality. You are a true blessing to the staff, children and families of VisionTrust Guatemala!
