This blog is brought to you by guest writer Bob H. from Chillicothe, IL. Bob is a cycling enthusiast and loves using his talent to bring hope to those in need!
In 2007, a group of avid cyclists from Chillicothe Christian Church asked themselves, “How can we leverage our passion for cycling into doing some good for the world?” We discovered that there were a number of bike rides in our area, but not many that were actually doing something to benefit missions.
So, we launched our first-ever Charity Bike Ride in October of that year, which turned out to be a chilly day! We’ve since learned that you get a better attendance with better weather, so we moved the date to September in more recent years. The cost of the ride is fairly nominal – $20 per rider or $40 per family. All food items and other supplies are donated, so 100% of the money raised goes directly to missions.
This year was actually our first year to collaborate with VisionTrust. It was a great partnership, because we were able to raise awareness of VisionTrust’s work to people who otherwise would have never heard of it. VisionTrust supplied brochures that we gave to each rider that registered.
It really is great when you can combine your passion and hobby with something that will truly help people! We raised $600 this year, and we are hoping to do even more in the coming years!
