The city of Chennai in southern India has been battling severe flooding due to an unprecedented monsoon season this year. The region has received as much rain in the past few weeks as they normally would throughout the entire months-long monsoon season!
Many families in the Chennai area live in slum villages that are located in low-lying areas with no drainage infrastructure or sewage facilities. People are stranded, scared, and lacking daily necessities. A multitude of problems have arisen from the flooding, including a risk of waterborne illnesses due to lack of clean water. Furthermore, government aid has not reached the people who need it the most.
Of the 30 Learning Centers VisionTrust operates in India, 10 have been damaged during the flooding and forced to close, affecting more than 1,000 children and 80 of our Local Heroes in the predominately Hindu community of Chennai. These people need our help, and we are called to respond in love. At VisionTrust, we are dedicated to building long-term relationships in order to effect sustainable change in the 17 countries where we serve. But when emergencies arise, we act.
Just this week on #GivingTuesday we raised awareness and funds to share meals with more children in need. More than $2,600 was raised, and all of it will be used to help provide food for those affected by the flooding in India. But there is more to do. Would you join in this special effort by helping provide a $63 relief kit containing bedding and a two-month supply of clean drinking water and basic food supplies?
This is indeed a time to let the light of Christ shine so others will see the good deeds and glorify our Father in heaven (Matthew 5:16). Would you come alongside us to be a shining light for these children and their families in the midst of this dark situation?
