A country of just over 16,000 people, and only three percent of these people are professing Christians.
What if we said that in that country a movement exists with intent to plant 500 churches by 2021? What if we said that since 2010, the Christian population in that country had more than doubled?
What if we told you that hope is spreading in Cambodia?
Recently, Christianity Today produced an article titled, “Unlocking Cambodian Christianity,” in which correspondent Kate Shellnutt analyzed a recent explosion of Gospel-centered organizations in Cambodia.
The key to these organizations’ success? Relationship building through the provision of community services.
“No one told me ‘don’t worship idols,’” said one local leader. “The goal is to build a relationship with them and teach them the truth little by little. When they know God, they tear down the idols themselves.”
This example highlights just one of the ways community relationship building acts as an effective tool for evangelism.
As Christianity Today’s article highlighted, the nationals of Cambodia are eager to know the Lord, and with a total of five Learning Centers currently operating in Cambodia, VisionTrust models Godly love by serving vulnerable children in the community.
“[Cambodia] is a nation that is pursuing a new hope. They want to see something real. It is an opportunity for the church of Jesus to become real to them,” said Phnom Penh pastor Sem Sophea.
VisionTrust sees this urgency to know Jesus displayed in the amazing children who attend our Learning Centers. One of these young people in particular, Kong*, is taking leaps and bounds to find a better life for himself and his family.
Orphaned as a young child, 16-year-old Kong lives with his grandmother in a remote village. Though Kong lives far from VisionTrust Learning Centers, he doesn’t let that stop him.
In fact, every morning Kong takes an hour and a half bike ride to reach a place that he says has become like home—his VisionTrust Learning Center. There, Kong enjoys playing football with his peers and learning more about the gracious love of Jesus Christ.
Though his circumstances are far from perfect, and he often struggles to provide the physical means for survival, Kong has found something invaluable at the VisionTrust Learning Center: the opportunity to dream, to be a kid and to seek a brighter future.
VisionTrust is honored to be a part of Cambodia’s growth. As the Gospel explodes in this nation, we look forward to sharing more stories like Kong’s. In fact, by checking out the recap of our Facebook Live, you can learn more now about sponsoring a child in Cambodia.
