It’s an age old truth: you can’t have everything you want. Sometimes, in order to gain one thing, you must sacrifice something else. For the Hofmeister family, they wanted to sponsor 7-year-old Jeerana from Thailand, but realized they would have to make sacrifices in order to squeeze the extra $35 a month into their budget.
So, they decided to sacrifice.
If they ate a meal of rice and beans one night a week, they could afford to sponsor Jeerana.
The fruit that came from the decision to eat this simple meal turned out to be bigger than just the support Jeerana receives. Melissa shared, “We use the time over dinner to talk about poverty with our kids and pray for Jeerana. We help them experience it by having them fill up a pitcher with water from the bathroom on the far side of the house and by allowing their taste buds to long for the variety of foods they are used to. And our kids get it! ‘Rice and Beans Night’ has been transforming – giving us the eyes and heart of Jesus during the busyness of each week.”
Brian, Melissa and their 3 boys have been having “Rice and Beans Night” with their family for over a year now! They have also invited their small group from church to join them. Their simple sacrifice is having a big influence in their backyard and around the world.
