Sean G. from Waukesha, Wisconsin shares a sweet moment from his time in Peru at our new Learning Center.
I had the privilege of serving on the first team at the Luz y Vida (Light and Life) Learning Center in Ayacucho, Peru. One of my roles on the team was to help lead a simple craft activity each day during a 4 day Vacation Bible School.
One day, the craft project was to make a necklace, consisting of a piece of string and a tiny anchor. The children picked from different colors of string and tied on the anchor, then tied the necklace on their necks. Due to the age of the kids, some of the younger ones needed help. We all sat around on the various benches and helped the kids as they approached us, smiling and motioning for us to tie the necklaces on them. As I was sitting on the bench tying what seemed like the 100th necklace, a precious little girl came up to me and smiling shyly, held out her necklace while turning to face away from me and lift her hair off of the back of her neck. As she backed up to the point of almost sitting in my lap, I fumbled with the string, struck by the simple innocence of a trusting child allowing and asking for me, a frumpy middle-aged gringo, to help her.
It was in this moment that time seemed to stop, the surroundings seemed to fade into the background, the chaos around me subsided, and I heard in my heart an almost audible voice saying, “Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.’ (Matthew 25:40). “Is this you Lord?” I asked in a whispered prayer, welling up in tears as I realized I was in the presence of my Jesus, who had come to me in the form of a small, precious child in my arms. “Yes, its me Sean,” He said.
Later I recounted the experience in my journal, “I am humbled Lord. So much of my life falls away and into perspective when I’m here. Help me to apply it to real life when I get back.”
Once in a great while, Jesus speaks to me through His word, a whispered prayer, a circumstance, and a quiet confirmation of the Holy Spirit, to let me know He’s here with me. I’m thankful and humbled for how He came to me in the form of a precious little girl one afternoon in a Learning Center in Peru. I hope you will consider having the opportunity to encounter Him through a child as you sponsor a child, serve at a Learning Center, or some other way through VisionTrust as He leads you!
