That’s right, you only live once. Thank you Drake for coining the infamous phrase that only seems to encourage flighty commitments, drunken nights, and shallow living. But think about it, you only live once.
Whoa. It makes you evaluate—what’s my life really about?
A life isn’t made up of one particular thing—one moment, one response, or one decision. In fact, it’s made up of hundreds, thousands, and/or millions of tiny ones: What should I wear today? Coffee or no coffee? Should I respond in anger or grace? A life is defined by the culmination of decisions an individual makes over their time here on earth—whether minutes, months, years, or decades.
With that being said, here’s question number two: what’s my core motivation for my daily decisions?
If we’re completely honest with ourselves, these would be a few of our answers: being liked, being respected, making money, looking beautiful, seeking control, finding a partner, hiding pain, fleeing loneliness.
Not the most inspiring life purposes, huh? I would hate to look back on my journey and admit I was chasing one or all of the answers above. Personally, I want my life to be about Jesus, about the Savior of the world, about the one directing the whole show. So, I’m making the decision to sit at Jesus’ feet, to be His servant, to make this life about Him and the things He cares about in my decisions—today, now.
So that leaves us with question number three: Are you making the tiny decisions that fall in line with what you want your life to be about? Are you in tune with the decisions God’s leading you into today?
Maybe it’s to encourage the coworker sitting in the next cubicle over, maybe it’s to rest quietly in His presence, maybe it’s to serve internationally with a VisionTrust team :). I don’t know what God’s asking of you. But I do know that if we choose to daily live into His purposes, we’ll dodge the regrets and have the freedom to fully embrace the phrase: YOLO.
